Free. Android 13+ or iOS 18+, and a Tesla that works with a phone key.

What only TeslaHeads shows

Checked against Tesla's own app, version 4.61.5. Battery health, a live camera and a clip viewer are in Tesla's app too, so they are not on this list.

  • The car's key list, with each key's role
  • An alert when a new key is added (Tesla alerts only on removal)
  • Sentry's live state, not just on or off
  • Drive power in kW, and regen
  • A slow-leak alert before the car's own warning
  • A towing alert
  • Drives analysed on the web
  • The Dashcam for friends on the web

From the driveway to anywhere

Up close it is a phone key and an instrument panel. Far away it keeps watch, records your drives and shows your car on the map.

  1. Beside the car

    Bluetooth

    Phone key

TeslaHeads adds its own Driver key to your car over Bluetooth. Setup takes four steps: the app reads the VIN from the car's screen with the camera, then you tap the key card to pair. After that it connects by itself when you are near, even with the app closed.

    • Lock; unlock after your fingerprint or Face ID, with a two-tap guard
    • Frunk, trunk, vent or close the windows, charge port, horn, flash
    • Climate and temperature; Keep, Dog and Camp modes; seat heating and ventilation

No Tesla yet? Demo mode runs the app with a simulated car.

The app's pairing step: the car's console with the key-card reader marked
  2. Beside the car

    Bluetooth, no internet

    Live state

What the car itself reports: battery, range and battery health to one decimal, charging power, what is limiting the charge and the charge-port light's colour; doors, locks, windows, trunk and frunk.

    • "Locked from inside" and "someone in the car"
    • Cabin Overheat Protection and Dog Mode in detail
    • Tyre pressures beside the recommended values
    • Drive power in kW, negative while regenerating
    • Elevation, GPS accuracy, compass
    • The car's key list, with each key's type and role
    • Sentry's live state: off, idle, armed, aware, alarm
The app's Battery and charging screen
The app's Tyres screen with the recommended pressures
  3. Walking away

The phone, then the Tesla cloud

    Sentry watch

TeslaHeads keeps watch with the app closed and tells you when something happens to the parked car.

    • Towing: the parked car moves more than 150 m
    • A new key is added to the car
    • Sentry notices someone. If you like, the car answers with lights or the horn; only lights from 22:00 to 08:00
    • A slow tyre leak, one tyre 0.15 bar below the other three, before the car's own warning
    • Left open, doors or windows: from the phone as you walk away, from the cloud after 10 minutes in P

Alarms break through Do Not Disturb and Focus. Alerts never carry the car's name, VIN or location.

The app's Guard screen: what it watches for

A key was added to your car • now

  4. On the road

    Recorded on the phone

    Drives

Every drive is recorded on its own. It starts when the car leaves P and ends 3 minutes after it returns, with a sample every 2 seconds, even with the app closed. Fifteen minutes take about 5 KB and wait on the phone until there is internet.

    Your Tesla account

    Away from the car

Link your Tesla account and the car pushes its data through Fleet Telemetry. It is never polled. The map, alerts and state keep working when you are far away.

    • Remote commands: climate on and off, temperature 15–28 °C, Keep, Dog and Camp modes, lock
    • 30 free wakes a month
    • Unlock, trunk, frunk, Sentry off, horn and lights are deliberately not remote

    Map and friends

Show your car on the live community map to everyone, or only to friends you choose. New cars start hidden.

    • Add friends by username or a TM-XXXXXX code, and give each permission one by one
    • A photo and video gallery of the car, with location data stripped
    • Your car is drawn from its VIN and Tesla's own record: model, paint, wheels. Nobody picks it by hand

The live map

Cars their owners chose to show, moving as they drive. Follow a friend with ETA and remaining km, and when their Dashcam is on, their road plays above their car, about 2 minutes behind.

The TeslaHeads Dashcam box

Three proposed looks; none is chosen yet.

Beta

Dashcam box

A small box for the glovebox USB port. It becomes your car's USB drive and sends the front camera to the web, about 2 minutes behind the road, for you and the friends you allow.

In beta: not for sale yet.

How it works

  1. Plug it into the glovebox USB

It becomes the car's USB drive, a 64 GB image. It never writes to or deletes from Tesla's own area; it only reads copies.

Needs Tesla's "Encrypt Dashcam Recordings" turned off.

  2. Scan the QR on the box

The app joins the box's own Wi-Fi access point (WPA2/WPA3). The box has no internet of its own, no Tesla key, and does not know the VIN.

  3. Watch the Dashcam with friends on the web

The front camera reaches teslaheads.com about 2 minutes behind the road: Tesla writes each clip only when its minute ends, so nothing can be real-time. Speed and the route play in sync, for up to 5 viewers per car.

Event archive

Sentry events and saved or honk events are archived with all 6 cameras on the box, about 200 events, and kept even after Tesla's drive fills up. Near the car the phone plays all 6 cameras in sync, and up to 16 clip-minutes can be saved to the phone.

The Dashcam ends on its own at the end of the drive, after 10 minutes without a viewer, or at the phone's monthly data limit (5 GB by default).

What stays private

  • Nothing is recorded on the serverVideo is held only in memory, at most 5 minutes, and deleted the moment the Dashcam ends.
  • No location ever leaves the boxIt has no internet of its own, no Tesla key, and does not know the VIN.
  • Tesla's own area stays untouchedThe box only reads copies; it never writes to it or deletes from it.
  • Only the friends you allowAt most 5 viewers per car.
The app's Dashcam settings: picture quality, who can watch, the two-minute delay
The Dashcam box screen in the app: connected, temperature, free space, a new QR

Help train AI world models

World models are AI that learn how the road behaves, its traffic, people and weather, from real driving. Your Dashcam box will be able to add to them.

  • Off unless you turn it on, and you can stop at any time.
  • Short clips from the front camera only, with plates and faces blurred before they leave.
  • No VIN, no name, no account: nothing that says whose car it was.
  • Who receives it, and what you get back, is published before it starts.

Privacy

Your car's identity stays on your phone.

Read the privacy policy

  • The VIN, the car's Bluetooth address and the phone key stay on your phone; the key lives in the phone's secure hardware.
  • The server knows your car only by a random id.
  • No ads, no trackers, no data sold.
  • Photos are stripped of location.
  • New cars start hidden on the map.
  • Delete your account and cars any time, in the app or on the site.

Questions

Is TeslaHeads free?

Yes. You need Android 13 or later, or iOS 18 or later, and a Tesla that works with a phone key.

Does it need the internet?

Not next to the car: it talks to the car over Bluetooth with its own phone key. For the map, alerts and state when you are far away, link your Tesla account.

Does it keep waking or polling my car?

No. The car pushes its data through Fleet Telemetry; TeslaHeads never polls it. Remote commands come with 30 free wakes a month.

Why can't I unlock from far away?

On purpose. From far away you can turn climate on and off, set 15–28 °C, choose Keep, Dog or Camp mode, and lock. Unlock, trunk, frunk, Sentry off, horn and lights work only beside the car.

Is the Dashcam live?

It runs about 2 minutes behind the road. Tesla writes each clip only when its minute ends, so nothing can be real-time.

Can I try it without a Tesla?

Yes. Demo mode runs the app with a simulated car.

Take it to your car tonight.

Free on Android and iPhone.
